The Aviation Industry is a rapidly growing industry that has captured my fascination from a young age. I first realised that I wanted to explore the realm of Aerospace when I boarded a plane to India and ever since then these giant machines have intrigued me. I have a great passion for flying and hope to become a pilot after completing an Aerospace degree. Particular modules in Aerospace engineering that interest me are ‘fundamental of solid body mechanics’ and ‘flight testing’. Physics A-level now excites me even further as it perpetuates theories which I never imagined were possible and are related to what I hope to study further. Currently, the mechanics module has interested me the most, it is something that I really enjoy studying and want to research into further.
My passion for Aerospace engineering increased when I took part in two lessons at North London Flying School and had an opportunity to handle the aircraft myself. In addition to this, I have also successfully navigated a Boeing 777 simulator. I was enthralled to see how the plane flies and testing different manoeuvres in the sky made me even more eager to learn. This was the defining moment for setting my future career to be in aerospace engineering. It would also give me more of an insight into aircraft mechanism. This was reinforced by attending various open days in this field, watching several videos about this industry as well as listening to the talks from a range of Aerospace engineers.
One key skill required for aerospace engineering is good communication skills. I regularly volunteer in the Public Relations department at the BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Temple in Neasden and have helped out and participated in many large events. Recently, I assisted in the Hindu New Year celebrations, where, together as a team, we had to cater for some 2,000 guests. Being a part of this team helped me learn how to work with others and also in pressured situations. I also offered my services during the Open House event, where we were involved in guiding visitors from all over the country. This experience enhanced my ability to think on my feet and make decisions in a timely manner. Teaching a second language weekly at my local community Sunday school has helped me improve my presentation skills.
Furthermore, for the past year, I have also been volunteering at ‘Asha Charity shop’ and helping their organisation. There were many tasks that I had to carry out which included serving customers at the till, sorting out clothes and other items, pricing, arranging the shop and helping customers around the shop. From the challenges I faced during my time here, I realised that my organisational skills have greatly increased.
As a person, I strongly believe I am trustworthy and liable. From Year 7 to Year 11, I was chosen to be Cricket captain for the school team. This allowed me to demonstrate my leadership skills. I was also leader of my group on the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award Expedition. I successfully guided the group to our designated campsite from where we were stranded, which was high on a mountain in damp, foggy weather and with no means of communications. From the challenge we faced on this expedition, I grasped how to work as part of a team and also how to handle such situations calmly – something that will be a key skill for aerospace engineering.
