Experience:
Volunteering – King’s College Hospital:
From September 2018, I have been volunteering regularly every Saturday at King’s College Hospital.
I have improved my patient interaction skills, and learned to be aware of my words before I speak them.
It has been an opportunity for me to express my empathy, and to endeavour to appear confident enough for people to trust me enough to confide in me, and kind enough for them to call me for assistance without hesitation.
Prefect:
Throughout Year 11, from September 2017 to June 2018, I was a prefect in The Palmer Catholic Academy.
This has taught me to be dedicated as I had to be at my designated post every lunch, to ensure that students in the younger years conduct themselves in an appropriate manner.
Private Tutor:
I tutor children from KS1 to KS3 English, and I also teach GSCE students Biology.
This has helped my organisational skills as the tuitions are set at a specific time every week, so I have managed to complete all other activities such as homework, revision and free time around this.
I have also learned to adapt myself to change my teaching style and behaviour according to each and every student due to the fact that each and every student’s ability and capability differs.
Student Librarian:
In the academic year 2015/16, I was a student librarian at The Palmer Catholic Academy and I volunteered every lunch for a year, highlighting my sustained commitment.
I was initially placed with the duty of putting away books, ensuring books were in the right place. However I was soon promoted from an organisational role to a leadership role.
Extracurricular Activities:
UCL Summer School:
In the summer of 2018, I participated in UCL’s Young Researchers programme where I worked with a PhD student specialising in Neuroscience. At the end of the programme, I wrote a 3000 word essay on neurodegenerative diseases and stem cell therapy.
This refined my researching skills but also my time-management as I had a due-date by which I had to have completed the assignment, so I balanced my free time and work.
St. Joseph’s Care Home:
In 2017, I volunteered at St. Jospeh’s care home for a few months, where I sat with the elderly residents with mental health problems.
My time at the care home enlightened me to how some of the elderly, regardless of being affected by a mental disease, remember their distant past in vivid detail; during my time there I learnt a lot.
Carnatic Vocal:
From the age of 7, I have been practising Carnatic vocal. In November 2016, I completed all 8 grades of Carnatic Vocal, and achieved a distinction for my diploma.
My completion of Carnatic Vocal shows my dedication, and the fact that I still practise it shows my love and dedication towards it.
Nuffield School For the Deaf and Blind, Kaithady:
In August 2016, during my vacation in Sri Lanka, I volunteered in a school in Sri Lanka that schooled children who were affected in the civil war.
This experience allowed me to gain a different, new perspective on the world, making me want to continue volunteering in England, to try to make a difference.
This led to me deciding to volunteer when I returned to England.
Think 2wice Charity:
In 2016, I participated in a charity walk held by Think 2wice charity, showing my eagerness to help others.
Achievements
Jack Petchey Award:
In 2015, I was nominated by my peers and teachers for the Jack Petchey Award.
I received this award due to assisting staff around the school in my free time, illustrating my intention of bettering the environment around me.
Biology Challenge: Bronze Award
UKMT Maths Challenge: Silver Award
Subject Awards in The Palmer Catholic Academy: During my five years, I achieved numerous awards for effort and achievement in English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Religious Education,
Languages:
I am fluent in speaking, reading and writing in English and Tamil, and am partially fluent in French.
