About Isi A
English Tutor
I am an English tutor. I teach key stage 3 and 4 students. I have been teaching English Language and English Literature for the past twenty years in the UK. Apart from teaching English, I am also a writer, whose poems, plays and short stories have been read in different settings. My writing and dramatic skills go hand in hand because I have always enjoyed dramatizing some aspects of my English lessons in schools, workshops and Seminars. Recently, I met a former student who reminded me about one of my simple methods for teaching sentence types, (simple, compound, complex) interestingly; through a song. This shows that I would go any length to motivate my students to learn and remember what I teach them. The English and Creative Writing lessons I thought in schools in Birmingham and environs are always remembered by my students and many of them passed in flying colours.
I have also used Creative writing as a subject for motivating students and highlighting essential notions in English Language and Literature. In teaching students in Secondary Schools and Colleges, I have helped to make them appreciate the essence of differentiating between the content and context of the written piece; and in most cases, I have also helped them to understand the implicit and explicit notions in the written piece, and the need for them to appreciate the overall essence of the created piece. I have also worked with students to use ordinary ideas within their immediate environment or communities to appreciate or create poems, short stories and plays – and at the same time, helping them to appreciate the importance of inculcating good structures, language and tone. In demonstrating the aforementioned, I have endeavoured to teach the students in fun ways, thus, encouraging them to learn difficult aspects with
It should be noted that I have also encouraged my students to read extensively and motivated them to understand the essence of purpose, from the context of informing and influencing others persuasively. For example, a basic persuasive writing acronym like AFOREST – (adjectives, adverbs, facts, opinions, rhetorical questions, emotive language, expert opinions, and statistics) has been useful for helping my students to know how to explore persuasive features aptly. Equally relevant is that I have used my sense of humour as underpinning for putting difficult subjects across. In doing all these, I have helped students to enjoy English Language and Literature despite the rigours of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. I have done all these from the heart for the benefit of my students.
