What should I write in my personal statement?
Your personal statement is one of the most important areas of your profile because it allows you to introduce yourself to aspiring students and lets you persuade the student to select you as their tutor. It should be written in a professional and friendly manner.
We think that the best personal statements read more like a short biography rather than a CV or list of your accomplishments. Your personal statement should inform your students about your experiences and teaching style as well as engage them.
It needs to be at least 750 characters long, and should also be written in paragraphs rather than bullet points. It also needs to be written in the first person.
We understand that there is no such thing as a perfect personal statement as everyone expresses themselves differently, however if you are struggling to complete it, here are the things we look for in a personal statement:
- A sentence to introduce yourself to students?
- What previous tutoring experience you have?
- What is your teaching style/how would you run your lessons?
You will not have to mention your knowledge about the curriculum and exam boards if you teach non-academic subjects because you might not prepare students for school exams.
There are a few things that your personal statement should not contain. Please make sure you don't include any of these things:
- Personal contact details
- Social media details
- Link
to website/YouTube channel
- Offers of free lessons
- Offers
of group lessons
- Any Inappropriate language
- Claiming DBS checks if a copy of it has not been provided to Tutor Finder.
